Introduction: The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc. was established as a non-profit corporation on July 1, 1973. It is governed by a 14-member Board of Directors. As the prime contractor for the TRIDENT D5 Missile guidance system, Draper is modernizing the missile’s MK6 inertial guidance system to extend its life to the year 2042. This major modernization effort, called MK6 Life Extension (MK6LE), will lower the Navy’s future maintenance costs as well as provide flexibility to support new missions and upgrades. Equally important has been our new responsibility to facilitate and manage the Navy’s Integrated Support Facility for repairing existing MK6 guidance systems. This facility, located in Pittsfield, Mass., will become fully operational in 2007. The Draper team and its major subcontractors also made significant progress this year on developing leading-edge technologies. In the area of inertial instruments, a new solid-state, Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyroscope (IFOG) was proven to be a viable possible replacement for the existing mechanical gyro for MK6LE. Additionally, we successfully demonstrated a low-noise variant of our Silicon Oscillating Accelerometer (SOA), which could be utilized for future application to the TRIDENT submarine navigation system. Our expertise in radiation-hardened semiconductor design has allowed us to develop common electronic parts jointly with Lockheed Martin for application to both MK6LE guidance and missile flight control electronics. Of particular interest is the design team’s innovative repackaging of commercial semiconductor technology for MK6LE radiation-hardened memory. One specific candidate for repackaging, magnetoresistive non-volatile memory, is targeted also for application to cell phones.
